Sun Qixin Hosting Special Report Conference on South-South Cooperation in UN

On 14th September, Sun Qixin, the president of China Agricultural University (CAU) and Mr. Chediek, the Director of United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and Envoy of the Secretary General attended South-South Cooperation Special Report Conference together. President Sun Qixin hosted and presented South-South Cooperation special report the Assessing Frame of South-South Cooperation and Its Application in China-Tanzanian Cooperation conducted by China Belt and Road Institute for Agricultural Cooperation/ China Institute for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (BRIAC/CISSCA). Odida, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Uganda to the United Nations, Mr. Fan Shenggen, the Director of International Food Policy Research Institute and Representatives of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development and the United Nations Development Programme delivered speeches or shared their opinions respectively at the conference. Ambassadors or representatives from dozens of countries for the same mission also presented at the conference, including China, Tanzania, Israel, Nepal and Grenada.

President Sun Qixin pointed out that South-South Cooperation is becoming a significant force in global development. In 1978, UN South-South Cooperation High-level General Assembly passed Buenos Aires Action Plan, which was to accelerate and achieve technical cooperation between developing countries at global level. To celebrate the declaration of the Action Plan 40 years ago, BRIAC&CISSCA accomplished a special report the Assessing Frame of South-South Cooperation and Its Application in China-Tanzanian Cooperation in order to provide more insights and methods for South-South Cooperation. This report presented and assessed typical examples of South-South Cooperation of China and Tanzania in agriculture, infrastructure and hygiene, summarized elements of the new South-South Cooperation promoted and practiced in developing countries and China played a leading role. CAU will continue to accelerate South-South Cooperation in fields of agriculture and rural areas, striving to do more in knowledge transfer, talents cultivation and experience sharing.

Director Chediek congratulated on the establishment of BRIAC/CISSCA in CAU, applauded its effort in supporting South-South Cooperation in agricultural field and experience sharing in the world. He stressed that the key to the sustainable development of the agriculture and rural areas in developing countries is reduction and elimination of poverty and starvation worldwide. China has been exploring and practicing South-South Cooperation for more than 60 years, accumulating large amount of great experience.

Li Xiaoyun, the Dean of BRIAC/CISSCA, reviewed the backgrounds and achievements of this report. He emphasized that the South-South Cooperation being demonstrated and promoted in China and India by far is a new type cooperation model, quite different from the traditional model, mainly in three aspects, the funding, the practice and cooperation. For the further development of this new type cooperation, it is important for international society and developing countries to understand more about the cooperative model. Against such background, the report, quite different from the typical systematic date collection was accomplished, a multi-dimension research summary in new Sino-Tanzania cooperation, in learning perspective, including but not limited to politics, economics, society and culture.

Wang Xiaojun, Deputy Director of United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, hosted the forum. She pointed out that the report was a new achievement of CAU in promoting South-South Cooperation, providing a chance for international communications between governments, academic institutions, and international organizations. All attended the conference reached an agreement that the factors vital for accelerating the South-South cooperation are the knowledge sharing and mutual learning.

Jin Weiwei, the Dean of College of Agronomy and Biotechnology, Han Zhenhai, Dean of College of Horticulture, Peng Youliang, Dean of college of Plant Protection, Feng Weizhe, Director of CAU International Office attended the report conference and had extensive communications with other attendees.
